The pen is ebonite, with an urushi finish. The Red Hana-nuri finish has a "distressed" look to it, where the red appears to be scuffed around the edges to reveal a layer of black underneath. This is one of the most appealing urushi finishes I have sen, and the warm, highly aturated vermillion red is a particularly striking colour.
